UFC 289: Female Fight Highlights – Nunes Reigns Supreme, Belbita and Jasudavicius Triumph

Updated: Jun 22, 2023

UFC 289 was a spectacle for MMA enthusiasts around the world, especially for fans of women's MMA. The event was held in Vancouver, British Columbia and headlined by the greatest female MMA fighter of all time, Amanda Nunes.

Nunes Outclasses Aldana in Dominant Performance

Amanda Nunes, the reigning two-division champion, returned to the Octagon after a year to defend her bantamweight title against Irene Aldana.

Despite Aldana's hopes of adding to Mexico's MMA glory, she was unable to overcome a rejuvenated Nunes. Throughout the five rounds, Nunes maintained a superior stance, overwhelming Aldana with a relentless barrage of strikes, takedowns, and control time.

The end result was a unanimous decision in favor of Nunes (50-44, 50-44, 50-43), who further cemented her legacy as the greatest women's MMA fighter. With this win, she extended her already impressive combined title reign, now nearing 4,000 days.

Belbita Defeats Oliveira in Strawweight Clash

Earlier in the night, strawweight fighters Diana Belbita and Maria Oliveira faced off in a contest that saw both athletes giving their all. Belbita dominated the fight from the beginning, making effective use of jabs and leg kicks to keep Oliveira at bay.

Oliveira, though resilient, couldn't match Belbita's intensity and volume, leading to a unanimous decision in Belbita's favor (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).

Jasudavicius Takes Down Maverick in Flyweight Contest

In another thrilling female bout, flyweight fighters Jasmine Jasudavicius and Miranda Maverick showcased their talents. After a tightly contested first round, Jasudavicius took control in the latter two, capitalizing on Maverick's defensive lapses.

Despite Maverick's best efforts, Jasudavicius was awarded a unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28), marking a significant win in her UFC career.

UFC 289's female fights were a testament to the growing talent and competitiveness in women's MMA. From Amanda Nunes' dominant title defense to the exhilarating performances of Belbita and Jasudavicius, fans were treated to an unforgettable night of action. As the sport continues to evolve, these athletes prove that they are not just participants, but trailblazers in their own right.
